JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Caregiving requires an abundance of patience which doesn’t always come naturally.  Each of you have chosen to support your loved one in a manner that places the bulk of the responsibility on you, and it is truly one of the toughest jobs imaginable.  In the coming year, I wish for you the strength, the patience and the support you need to continue on this journey of love.  Below find few tips and local resources that may be of help, and please remember that our Silverthorne team is always here to lend our support and expertise whenever you need us.

  1. Take care of your own health and well-being so that you can be strong enough to care for your loved one.  Visit your doctor regularly and carve out some time for exercise.  The Workout Club of Salem offers multiple classes for seniors and has offered to waive the $199.00 enrollment fee if we have 5 or more people sign up.  Contact Brody.Williams@theworkoutclub.com to schedule a free trial day.  The Rockingham Mall opens its doors at 8:00 AM for “Mall Walkers”, and our senior center offers all kinds of classes and activities to enhance your well-being.  Our monthly “Just Because” dinners are also a great way to relax and take a break from cooking.

  1. Remember, you are not alone!  Seek support from other caregivers.  The Greater Salem Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, led by a professionally trained facilitator, meets at the Salem Senior Center on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 1:30-3:00 (Please call Patti Drelick at 603-818-9172 for more information). The Residence at Salem Woods offers a caregiver support group on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 11:30-12:30 with a light lunch, and Greystone has a support group scheduled for Wednesday, January 24th at 4:00 PM.  The Alzheimer’s Meet-up groups offer opportunities to get out with other caregivers and their loved ones- check it out at ALZ.org.

  2. Accept offers of help and suggest specific things that people can do to help you.  Enlist their support to shovel, cook, shop or just visit with your loved one so you can take care of you.

  3. Take that vacation- to visit a friend or your grandchildren.  Many of the local assisted living communities offer short-term respite stays.  You’d be amazed at how rejuvenating a short vacation from the stress of daily caregiving can be.

  4. Organize and update your medical information, and ensure your legal documents are in order.

  5. ServiceLink is a great resource for any senior related information – 866-634-9412.

Take time to breathe, to laugh, and to forgive yourself if necessary.  Enjoy the moments as those are yours to cherish – take a walk, hold hands, sing, dance, laugh…….

Happy New Year!

Love,

Maria
